Running a charitable organization means constantly balancing big goals with limited resources. That's why support from people like you matters so much.
You can contribute to our cause in several ways.
Donating Funds
A financial donation, even a small one, puts food on the table for families in Linn County.
You may have heard that food banks prefer monetary donations to food donations. Cash does have advantages for us. We can stretch a food dollar much further than an ordinary consumer, who pays retail prices at a grocery store. In addition to the savings we achieve through bulk purchasing, we work with a network of food suppliers to secure healthy food at discounted prices.
To donate money, you can send a personal or business check, made out to "Sharing Hands," to our street address.
Sharing Hands, Inc.
107 West Bishop Way
Brownsville, OR 97327
You can also pay online (Note: this link isn't ready yet. Stay tuned.)
Because we keep our administrative costs extremeely low, you can be sure that your donations directly benefit the people who truly need them.
Sharing Hands is a 501(c)(3) organization; your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the IRS.
Donating Food
Although monetary donations have some advantages, we welcome and appreciate food donations, too.
Shelf stable foods, such as canned or boxed items; dried rice, beans, and pasta; canned fish and chicken, canned soups and stews, and peanut butter. Please check expiration dates on all donated items and make sure that the packaging is not damaged and has not been opened.
Frozen and refrigerated items: TBD. Unfortunately, Oregon law does not allow us to acccept backyard eggs (unless you hold an Oregon Egg Handler License).
Home-grown produce: Over the years, many local growers and gardeners have donated their surplus to us. Everyone appreciates fresh produce! It doesn’t take a lot to make a real contribution; even one additional row of vegetables can make a difference in our community. Please make sure that your produce donations are clean, undamaged, and free of mold.
Donating to the Thrift Store
Thrift and in-kind item donations help stock our shelves and fund our programs. They also make it possible for us to offer good quality clothing and household items at affordable prices. We accept donations from 10am–3:30pm Tuesday through Friday.
Unfortunately, we sometimes receive items that obviously aren't in a condition that allows us to resell them. This leaves us with the cost of disposing or recycling them, which cuts into the funds we need to help our client families. In general, if an item is damaged, stained, worn out, or very dirty, we won't be able to use it. Sharing Hands reserves the right to decline any item we believe does not fit our guidelines. Here is a basic list of items we cannot accept.
- Used building materials or plumbing fixtures
- Fluorescent bulbs or ballasts
- Mattresses
- Infant furniture, car seats, strollers, etc.
- TV screens
- Anything broken or not working
- VHS or cassette tapes
- Used consumer products (open shampoo, burnt candles, etc.)
- Household chemicals
- Propane tanks or fire extinguishers
Volunteering
If you have time rather than money to give, volunteering your skills and energy is just as valuable — every hour donated is an hour we don't have to divert from our mission to cover. However you're able to contribute, it makes a real difference. [rewrite]
We have several opportunities for volunteers. For more information, and to sign up, see our Volunteering page.
